American Dream

Does the American Dream still exist for the "average" American? Yes? No?

Check out this web site of a trucking business in Southeastern Idaho. It was begun by a Mexican-American with a high school education.

Yes the "American Dream" is still there, it is just more difficult to achieve for many disadvantaged Americans.

Chad--Why do you think that it is more difficult now for disadvantaged Americans? With all of the civil rights acts that have been passed, I would think that it is actually easier for all Americans to participate in the American Dream. You don't really think that life is worse today for an African American than it was in the late 1950s?

When I refer to disadvantaged Americans I am talking about the comparison between poor people in inner-city Baltimore and say Beverly Hills. There is now way they have the same opportunities at their disposal. Just look at these reality shows on MTV nowdays. For some reason I can not see MTV doing a show on some poor kids from Baltimore that flip burgers at the local McDonald's.

Chad--I tend to agree with you, but I want you to look carefully at Benjamin Franklin's "Way to Wealth" and tell the class how you respond to Franklin's definition of how to succeed.

Fellow Bloggers--I want all of you to respond to Benjamin Franklin's description of how to achieve the American Dream. How many of his aphorisms do you agree with? How many of them seem outdated?

I believe the American Dream is still alive and well today. I think you can look all around the United States and see people who have came from little to nothing and then made something of themselves. I know that athletes probably are not the greatest example, but if you read autobiographies of some of the professional athletes today they did not come from wealthy backgrounds. This of course, is not the only example, there are obviously millions more out there.
